Probably my favorite Jack Kerouac-obsessed website is DHARMA beat. If you haven't checked it out before, you'll definitely want to put it on your "to-do list."

I apologize in advance to those of you who spend the next two hours addicted to surfing DHARMA beat when you had planned to do something else with that time. You were forewarned.

Kristen Stewart topless in On The Road movie

I wish I could give a crap about seeing Kristen Stewart topless in the upcoming On The Road movie, but I just can't. I still can't get my brain around why they'd cast her as Marylou, the lead female character in the film. I've seen her in a few movies, and I've never been that impressed with her acting. Plus, I just don't find her sexy at all, and the Marylou character ought to be sexy (if nothing else). She sure tried hard enough in Into The Wild, and it didn't work. I guess I just can't get her obnoxious role in Panic Room out of my mind.

I can't wait for the film, of course, and I am going to watch it with an open mind. Perhaps I will become a Kristen Stewart fan.

Jack Kerouac: Feminist redux

If you missed my post from February 8, 2009, titled "Jack Kerouac: Feminist," you missed a link to a great little piece by Dr. Audrey Sprenger, a Kerouac scholar with something important to say to those who would rail against beat literature as anti-feminist. Unfortunately, that link had gone dead, but Dr. Sprenger just provided me with a link to an updated version of her article, which she posted in reference to the upcoming On The Road movie. You can read it here, and I have also replaced the dead link in my February 8, 2009 post.

On The Road movie news

Jerry Cimino, founder and curator of The Beat Museum, wrote this article about The Movie. In it, we find out that director Salles and Garrett Hedlund (Cassady) blasted 4,000 miles across the U.S. in a '49 Hudson in April 2011 in order to boost authenticity. According to Cimino, Hedlund and the Hudson got pulled over more than once but never got a ticket, even going over 100 MPH. It reminds me of the time Neal talked his way out of a ticket while driving Furthur (according to The Electric Acid Kool-Aid Test).

Denver Kerouac fans take matters into their own hands

According to this article at Denver Westword News, a group in Denver has taken it upon themselves to rectify a wrong: none of The Movie is being filmed in Denver, a city that played a vital role in Kerouac's travels (not to mention the creation of Cassady). According to the article:

For the last few months, cloaked in secrecy and carrying a copy of On the Road and a handful of stencils, this group has been visiting known Kerouac hangouts and doing the writer a favor he may or may not have gotten around to himself: tagging them with a likeness and the words "JACK WAS HERE."

It sure can't hurt business, especially once the interest in all things Kerouacian surges after The Movie's release. Which reminds me. What ideas do you have for me to capitalize on forthcoming release in order to sell a few books?

Kerouac and Marlon Brando

According to boing boing, this is an actual letter that Jack Kerouac wrote to Marlon Brando in 1957 trying to get him to make On The Road into a movie.

On The Road poster released!

According to EntertainmentWise, this is the first release of a poster to advertise the film version of On The Road.

I approve. So far so good (with the exception of some of the casting, but I am going to be open-minded until I see the film).

On The Road to be released Dec. 10

I just read (on Access Hollywood) that the film version of On The Road will be released December 10.

That is the day before my birthday, and happens to be on a Friday, so I know what I'll be doing and who's paying for it!

Short film about Kerouac upcoming on PBS

FYI, PBS will be airing a short Kerouac film, "Jack Kerouac Slept Here," as part of an upcoming fall series about Florida's cultural history. Click here for information.

On The Road unlikely to debut at Cannes in May

According to this article, the film version of On The Road is unlikely to makes its debut in May at Cannes this year. The article also contains some additional information of interest to fans. For example, contrary to early expectations, it will not be in black-and-white (good choice by director Salles). It features a great supporting cast (Viggo Mortensen, Steve Buscemi, Amy Adams, Alice Braga, to mention a few). They brought in some beat generation writings (Ginsberg, Burroughs) that weren't in Jack's novel. And, they tried to create 3-dimensional women characters (more kudos to Salles for that).

I, for one, cannot wait.

More On The Road film news

It looks like we'll get to see Kristen Stewart, playing Marylou, in the buff in the upcoming film version of On The Road. Click here for more info.

I'm not a big K-Stew fan, but I guess seeing her naked isn't a total turn-off (it remains to be "seen"). Let's look at the bright side, maybe this will spur an extra number of moviegoers to give the film a try, which will help lead to a revival of interest in Kerouac, which will lead to a huge uptick in sales of The Beat Handbook on Amazon.

In other words, Kristen Stewart naked = good news for The Beat Handbook.

Newest On The Road promo photo

The latest on-line scoop is that the film version of On The Road will be released in November. Above is the latest promotional photo that has been released.

I'm not wishing away summer in order to get to November, but when November comes, at least we'll (maybe) have this to look forward to.

Ideas?

It seems like the upcoming release of the film version of On The Road presents a marketing opportunity I might capitalize on and sell a few copies of The Beat Handbook.

Since I haven't exactly broken any sales records to date, I figured it was time to reach out to readers of The Daily Beat for some ideas.
